Overview
Also known as Théâtre National de l”Odéon, of the St-Germain-Des-Pres area, this theater was built in 1779 on the grounds of the former Hôtel de Condé, and was purchased by the king to house the Comédie Francaise. The Odéon Théâtre de l’Europe has suufered quite a shaky history. First, with the arrival of a new company in 1797, the name was changed. Destroyed by fire in 1807, it was rebuilt in the same year. After World War II, the theater specialized in 20th-century drama but was badly damaged by student riots in 1968. Since then it has been restored and now specializes in performing plays of other countries in native tongues.
