  Overview

Paris--Opora de Paris GarnierStarted in 1862 for Napoleon, this “wedding cake” of a building in the Opera District had been used for operas and ballets. The small lake under the building was the inspiration for the phantom’s hiding place in “Phantom of the Opera” by Leroux. The building is now used exclusively for dance since Opéra de Paris Bastille opened in 1989 and is the home of one of the world’s best classical dance companies, the Ballet de l’Opéra. One of the largest theaters in Europe, this rococo wonder has performance space for 450 artists and seating for 2,200 patrons.
