Rodin’s sculptures seem to come to life in the serene gardens and stately mansion that house his work. Built in the early 1700s, the mansion had changed hands several times before becoming a residence for several artists including Isadora Dunkin, Matisse, Cocteau, Rilke and Rodin. The government bought the mansion in 1911 and Rodin agreed to turn his collections over to the state in 1916. In 1919, two years after his death, the mansion became a museum displaying his work.

Before entering the mansion, explore the gardens where Rodin’s major work is displayed. Sculpture is scattered throughout the carefully groomed natural surroundings. Graceful bronze figures set amidst green foliage create a magical environment. After locating the major works outside, head into the museum to view some 500 sculptures, photos, drawings and furnishings. Bypass the gift shop until you’re ready to leave, but grab a brochure that explains Rodin’s work and the collection itself in good detail. The brochure also highlights the major sculpture found in each of the rooms, divided between two floors.

A reception area with several seats and a cloakroom are located on the ground floor. Only the ground floor is handicapped-accessible. A cafeteria is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. April 1 – September 30, and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. October 1 to December 31.

Hours: April through September – museum and shop open from 9:30 a.m. – 5:45 p.m., park closes at 6:45 p.m., last entrance at 5:15 p.m. October through March – museum and shop open from 9:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m., park closes at 5:00 p.m., last entrance at 4:15 p.m.
