If
you can afford it,
get a one-of-a-kind classic at one of the many haute couture
houses.
Each Quarter of Paris has its own unique shopping.
You will find international, Parisian, specialty shops to
excite the senses--designer chocolates, coffee and mustards, spin-off
shops, department stores and malls.
You
cannot think Paris fashion without thinking “haute couture” (a
one-of-a-kind creation)
as designed by one of the 23 houses listed with the Fédération
Française de la Couture having two major shows--January and July.
The center of Paris couture lies in the Champs-Elysées Quarter
with the houses of Yves Saint Laurent, Guy Laroche, Nina Ricci,
Givenchy, Christian Dior, Hermés and Chanel.
Tips
... Bringing
home French food is grand but make sure it is allowed.
Dress appropriately for shopping.
Sweats should be left home when going to the fashion houses!
A nod when you enter a shop is insufficient; instead, a
pleasant “Bonjour, madame/monsieur” is the ticket.
Remember the VAT (value-added tax) and make appropriate plans.
Shipping charges can be high and some stores have a minimum.
Shop Monday through Saturday 10-7 but times may vary and
sometimes shops close for lunch plus.
In tourists areas you will find some Sunday openings.
Most department stores use a ticket system so plan on more time
to shop.
Don’t be embarrassed to take a shopping break to sit and do
what Parisians do best--people-watch.
